Post-NanoCarb life – Interview with Jennifer

For our second post on NanoCarb alumni, we have the privilege to interview Dr Jennifer Fernández Alarcón, who spent her NanoCarb journey at the Mario Negri Institute in Milan and recently completed her PhD at the University of Milan-Bicocca. She is now back in Barcelona as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Chemical Institute of Sarrià … Read more

Post-NanoCarb life – Interview with Panos

While the NanoCarb project is coming to an end, some of our ESRs completed their PhD and are now moving on with their research career. In the coming weeks, you will read here a series of interviews with our NanoCarb alumni. The first interview is with Dr Panagiotis Georgiou, who completed his PhD last year … Read more

Eva, Alessia and Marko completed their PhD!

Three NanoCarb ESRs, Alessia (VITO), Eva and Marko (RCSI) successfully defended their thesis these last months. Moreover, Panagiotis (University of Warwick) received the 2023 Best PhD thesis award in the University of Warwick Department of Chemistry! You can find their publications on the Dissemination page. On behalf of the entire NanoCarb consortium, we congratulate our … Read more

New collaborative work addressing GNPs’ toxicity after long-term exposure to the material

NanoCarb ESRs Jennifer (Mario Negri Institute), Tanja (CIC biomaGUNE), Eva and Marko (RCSI) co-authored a new paper on Nanoscale titled “Long-term retention of gold nanoparticles in the liver is not affected by their physicochemical characteristics“, available open access. Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) show promise for healthcare applications, but their long-term toxicity remains uncertain. This collaborative effort … Read more

Daniela and Patricia defended their PhD theses!

We are pleased to announce that Daniela Tomasino (RCSI) and Patricia Perez Schmidt (CNR-SCITEC) successfully passed their viva this month. On behalf of the entire NanoCarb consortium, we would like to congratulate our two ESRs on their great success and wish them only the best for the future!

New paper on the microfluidics production of glycan-functionalized gold nanoparticles

Milan-based ESRs Patricia Perez Schmidt (CNR-SCITEC) and Ruth Mateu Ferrando (University of Milan) co-authored a paper in Angewandte Chemistry proposing a robust, fast and green synthetic route to produce ultrasmall glyco gold nanoparticles by an innovative photo-induced microfluidic approach. The publication is available Open Access on the journal’s website.

New NanoCarb publication highlights the role of glycans in the biocorona of glycosylated nanoparticles

Our ESRs Ashfaq Ahmad and Panagiotis G. Georgiou, from the Gibson group at the University of Warwick have co-authored a paper published in RSC Nanoscale, on the biomolecular corona of glycosylated gold nanoparticles, in collaboration with ESR Alessia Pancaro from VITO. Upon exposure to biological fluids, the fouling of nanomaterial surfaces results in the non-specific capture of … Read more

New publication reviews the potential of using glycans on nanoparticles in lateral flow diagnostics

In a collaborative effort with the John Radcliffe Hospital Oxford and the company Iceni Glycosciences Ltd., the Gibson group from the University of Warwick, including our ESR Panagiotis G. Georgiou, just published their latest work in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s journal Chemical Society Reviews. Titled “Glycosylated gold nanoparticles in point of care diagnostics: from … Read more

NanoCarb final Symposium held in Milan, IT

On the 18th and 19th of May, the NanoCarb final Symposium took place at the Mario Negri Institute in Milan, Italy. The event was organised by the ESRs in the Mario Negri Institute, CNR and VITO. This event included keynote speeches from a multidisciplinary panel of clinicians and researchers: Prof. Giuseppe Remuzzi, medical doctor and … Read more

Three new publications from NanoCarb ESRs

NanoCarb early-stage researchers (ESRs) continue to disseminate their work through publications in peer-reviewed chemistry journals. In the journal Polymer Chemistry, Nicola Judge (ESR 2) from the Heise group at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland studied the influence of the block copolypeptide surfactant structure on the size of polypeptide nanoparticles obtained by mini emulsion … Read more
